What Pasco says
A student in a home education setting must be evaluated once a year to show educational progress at a level commensurate with the child's abilities. The parent chooses the method from those in Florida Statute 1002.41, then files a copy of the evaluation in the superintendent's office.
Pasco states that “annually” means one year from the date of the Letter of Intent. You may submit as close to that anniversary as possible.
The five methods
The parent may use one of the following:
- A Florida-certified teacher chosen by the parent evaluates progress from a portfolio review and a discussion with the student.
- A nationally normed student achievement test administered by a certified teacher.
- A state student assessment test used by the district, administered by a certified teacher, at a location and under conditions the district approves.
- An evaluation by a psychologist holding a valid, active license under s. 490.003(7) or (8), F.S.
- Any other valid measurement tool mutually agreed upon by the superintendent and the parent.
If you miss it
Failure to provide the annual evaluation places the program in non-compliance and permits the superintendent, after notice to the parent, to terminate the program. A program terminated for non-compliance may not reopen for at least 180 days.
